About

Yeah… I said everything I needed to say in my very first post. So I figure I’ll get away with just posting a laconic version here.*

– Species is an natural-selection/evolution/artifical-life simulator/game currently in development. It’s difficult to descibe, but that about covers it,

– I’m the guy who is building it. This blog follows my progress in that endeavor and exposes my perverted genius to the world.

– The site also provides a platform for discussions about… well, whatever you want to discuss. Main blog posts will deal primarily with evolution with a side order of games programming, but the comments are the communities domain, not mine. All voices welcome, especially yours. No censorship.

…………………………………………….

*footnote: This is not at all because I’m lazy and anybody who says it is is a great big lying liar.

This looks really promising, a bit like what Spore should’ve been…

Oh dear… Spore. (said in a tone of cynical hatred that can only be born out of the decrepit ruins of long broken dreams)

Yeah, the similarities weren’t lost on me either when I first heard about Spore either, but Species was in development before that: I first dreamt up Species in 2006, and didn’t hear about Spore till 2008. I was dissappointed to realise I wouldn’t be the first to do fully mutable creatures, and worried that I was being overshadowed, but I was also extremely excited to play the game. And then it was actually released…

I’ll have to do a writeup of my opinions of Spore at some stage: maybe even do a compare and contrast. It will involve… adjectives. Possibly even metaphors.

SPORE was a travesty in terms of evolution, but the creature creator coupled with the expansion pack allowed me to make many large scale fictional battle scenes.

Spore is a utter joke, no natural selection, no mutations. It’s a game for ID nuts, not an evolution sim.

The website is temporarily down: we’re trying to upgrade to a daily backup system for the forum and pre-order databases and it’s being a bit of a duck about it…

For some reason, this game reminds me of Dwarf Fortress; both Species and Dwarf Fortress is in development by primarily one person with similar goals. I look very much forward to future development of both Species and DF 🙂
