Species 0.6.0 Hotfix 5

I’ve been busily hotfixing since the release, and I think the game is finally in a fairly stable state. It’s not perfect by any means, but I really want to start development work on 0.7.0.

Speaking of, I’m currently finalising the development list for the next update with the other team members. It’s gonna be an interesting one: less flashy and more ‘background’ than Rovers and Cladeograms, but still very worthwhile.

I’m curious what your opinion is with the whole situation of Microsoft abandoning XNA. Do you just plan to keep working on the ‘game’ regardless as is?

I do indeed. All this isn’t really a surprise: for all I love the framework, I’ve been extremely cynical about the future of XNA ever since they started pushing Windows Phone development over improving the API.

In truth, it doesn’t really matter to me: I wasn’t really keeping up with the latest software versions anyway (I’ve yet to even upgrade to XNA 4.0: due to finances and dislike for lack of features in VSExpress, I’m still using VS2008Pro).

If anything, the stuff I’ve been hearing about the abandonment of XNA is tempting me towards porting Species to MonoGame, which would help me target Mac and Linux and break free of a few EULA-imposed restrictions on modding. But that’s a big job, and I’d need to set aside quite a bit of dev time for it.
